Miles Davis won the critics' poll in Esquire as the new star of 1947, when he was 21 years old#In 1959, Davis was savagely beaten up by a policeman outside the Birdland jazz club in New York. He was cleared of charges of assault, and he dropped his own lawsuit against the city, fearing he would be victimised by the police#Davis's best-selling record was Bitches Brew, which sold more than a million copies in 1970#Davis had only one hit single, in 1986.
